Booby Traps

I tried to get into my apt the other night only to about kill myself tripping over my shoes that blocked the doorway.  I'm usually in and out of my apartment from once place to the next and don't like putting my shoes away when they are wet or dirty. 

Yesterday and today my husbands nieces have a swim meet in SuFu so after church this morning I will head back over to cheer them on.  It's sad a 3rd and a 7th grader would wax me in a race.  Since my hubs was gone I skyped a couple of their events to him from my phone.  Sometimes technology can be so amazing.

After the swim meet last night I met up with my cousins who were in town from the West side of the state to watch All State Chorus.  We hit up the mall for a couple hours then met up again after the concert for supper and a bottle of wine. 

Came home to throw in a movie, drink some wine and do my PT exercises.  Great combo!

Even with the time change I found it hard to get up early.  Finding motivation to do much of anything is hard without having my husband home.

Where's Waldo

Today I thought I would get more into the Halloween spirit and throw on a costume for school.  Needless to say it was an epic fail...

Does anyone remember the Where's Waldo books?  I saw this costume a couple years ago at a Halloween party and again the other day.  I thought it was a pretty good idea for school but not many kids got it :( 

Everyone kept asking if I was Santa or an Elf? Mrs. Clause or a candy cane???  And for some odd reason I had a ton of kids state "I've never seen you in jeans before Mrs. Setness."  Ahh the life of a PE teacher.

Not many of the Kindergarten or 1st graders had heard of Waldo and only a few 2nd graders had the books.

After I tracked down the books from the Middle School Library they loved trying to find him :)

For Warm Ups this week my kids boogied while trying to balance a bean bag on different body parts. 

Tonight was the first night in two weeks I did not have class or have to work at Chef Louies. Needless to say I took a nap, cleaned a ton of files off my computer then found this post on Facebook...

So I hit the treadmill...perfect running weather wasted.

I thought this was a cute analogy.

The Norm

Yesterday I attended a workshop with the school Wellness Committee to gain ideas on how to improve the wellness of our staff and students.   The workshop was presented by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation with the goal to promote lifelong, healthy habits and stop the increase in childhood obesity.  

One of the activities the presenter had us to do was find a poster that best described why we want to incorporate better health policies.  One poster I don't quite remember the statement but 3 others stated you wanted every student to get the chance to succeed, you strive to be a good role model or you want to make it the norm to eat healthy and participate in physical activity.  This activity kept popping up in my head so I figured it was time to get back to the blog....

I went back and forth thinking which one I really wanted to promote before choosing the Norm.  Wouldn't life be so much easier if it was normal to eat fresh, and vehicles got over when you were running or biking along the side of the road.  Instead drivers are running you off the road or the first person in line makes a "not so good" meal choice and the rest "fall in line."  I know I've been there.

Starting in November I am joining Run Eat Repeat and participating in the Pile on the Miles challenge.  Yes I want to be a role model to everyone out there but more so I want it to be Normal for everyone to get out there and get that HR up and sugar intake down.  
Some of my other school goals are to get a Mileage Club implemented during recess along with more fun runs put on for the kids and community.  I would also like to start a Facebook and or Twitter page for my PE class but sometimes social media is hard for me to keep up with.  Hard to believe I know...

In more school news my class is learning team work with the PaRaChUtE!!! It's hard to beat the parachute and scooter boards.  What was your favorite PE activity?

Spring is Coming...

It is technically my Friday so of course I have all this extra energy!!!  And my husband is on his way home so I am anxiously awaiting his arrival. 

Spring is coming about as slowly as I run... Sure was a pretty view yesterday.

My lil kindergartener helping tie her friends shoe.  Looks like she is doing a good job on the skeleton puzzle too.

I know this doesn't look like much but my grandpa built this balance beam for my sister and I maybe in 1989.  The carpet was old and falling off- literally. I duct taped the carpet on and was so ashamed I didn't take a "before" picture.  One of the staff members took it home last weekend and recovered it with new carpet for me.  My kindergarteners thought I bought a brand new balance beam.  I'm glad someone else can enjoy it as much as I did when I was little.

My physical education version of an Easter Egg Hunt.  Students were placed on teams of 2-3 and one at a time had to do a locomotor skill to the cones to retrieve and egg.  If there was one under the cone they ran it back to their teams bucket and gave a high five to their teammate.  When I thought all the eggs were found everyone crab walked to the cones and turned them over.  Then I gave them two eggs to rehide and we started over.

Today is a perfect day to post some Throwback Thursday pictures.  This weekend I might have to snag the old photo albums to see what other Kodak moments I can dig up.  And people wonder where I got my good looks.

I should probably be in bed already but I figured I would share some of my daily blessings to keep me in the Holiday Spirit.  This weekend was spent working more on our taxes and then balancing our checking account.  Yep, that took a couple of hours.  I usually am really good about staying on top of things like that but these taxes are getting the best of me.

 Saturday I ran my first Tri in three years.  Every minute of the thing was tough and I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest.  I kept thinking a marathon is easier than this...  Makes me really wonder what June will bring.  My funeral maybe?

Today in school the kids seemed out of control.  Three more days of teaching and then the final break before school gets out in May.  That seems almost too far away to think about.

 Last week Monday upon returning from Virginia Beach Cale and I went to the Kid Rock Concert.  How my two favorite artists vary so drastically from a Rocker who sings about smoking and drinking to a Christian artist who praises God is beyond me but I love them both. 

Praying this Easter for my hubs to come home for good.  Also thoughts and prayers to my Grandma who had a close call last week.  I lost my Grandma Cas just over a year ago and I am not ready to loose another one.

Shamrock On

Virginia Beach, VA waking up to the Atlantic Ocean.  Why can't it ever be really nice when we come here?

Last Weekend I ran the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon.  Usually I don't repeat races or states unless they are close events but two years ago I Shamrocked and thought it was such a fun weekend I decided to Shamrock my Irishness a second time on St. Patrick's Day.

Cale had to stretch it a little to get people to believe he was Irish.  Don't you think he pulled it off?


Virginia Beach does a great job with this event.  There is also a Townebank 8K, Leprechaun Run and Kids Final Mile the day before the Full & Half Marathon.  The swag bag includes a tech shirt and this year when we finished runners got a hat and fleece blanket.  It was perfect for walking back to the hotel in with the wind coming of the ocean.  

Any hotel along the boardwalk is not a far walk from the starting line and the full marathon starts at 8:30am giving you plenty of time.  The course fast and flat running down the boardwalk at parts and finishing by Neptune Statue.  There is plenty of road space and you never feel like you don't have enough room to run.  There is part of the course that runs through Fort Story and along Cape Henry where you are able to run past the Cape Henry Lighthouse.

 Last month I thought my Garmin 305 had finally said goodbye.  Thank goodness it turned on just before leaving for Birmingham.  It started acting funny again a couple weeks ago forcing me to break the bank on another Garmin.   My Garmin 610 doesn't seem to have as many options as my 305 or maybe I just haven't read the handbook enough but so far I miss my 15lb watch.  Could be why I ran faster last weekend with my new one.

Laundry and Taxes

Seems like I have spent the last month working on taxes.  I started at the table and then moved to the floor.  After trying to pick it up every night I gave up.  This is what my floor looks like and I just keep stepping over it. 

Last night I worked on my laundry in between.  No wonder I was running out of athletic clothes... Capri's, bike shorts, sports bras and running tanks. Good thing I can double everything for my work clothes. 

Does anyone else hang their laundry to dry?  My husband loves ducking to get down the hallway and into the bedroom.

 Today was Kindergarten screening so lucky me had a couple of open periods to work on my pedometer data.  I can not wait to be done with these things for the year.  I will have so much more time during my week to focus on teaching. 

Onto more exciting news, I am solo again this weekend.  My husband is almost finished with this grand daddy project.  This hotel has been going on for six months and I've had about as much alone time as I can take. 

I am incredibly proud of my husband and his crew of men that have worked so hard in North Dakota's wicked winter to put this thing together.

How do they do it?

This week has been a little tough on me with Cale being away on the job.  I know I just saw him a week ago but coming home to a quiet apartment night after night is really starting to get to me. 

Knowing how hard the last couple of days have been he propped his phone on the scaffolding and Skyped me on the job. 

Although it lifted my spirits watching him work for a good 15 minutes I still sat at the table in tears.  Poor me right?  My brother left a great "pull your big girl panties up" post on my Facebook wall.  With that being said I don't know how soldiers he referred to are able to be apart from their significant others for months at a time.  Prayers to everyone out there who is apart from their loved ones for one reason or another.

Last week Friday we had a good 5 inches of snow dumped on us.  Thank goodness it was just enough for a late start at school.  I volunteered to help with recess duty that day.  

Loved playing in the snow with my Kindergarteners- I talked him out of a snow angel and instead letting me bury him in it.

This week I am teaching my students how to volley practicing first with balloons.  I started them with their hands but no surprise everyone got really excited when they were told to try their heads.

Once Upon A Time

Once Upon A Time I started a blog, then I met Tim Key and his workouts started kicking my butt.

I have a couple goals in life and after running a marathon a month for a year I've felt a little lost these last four months wondering what my next goal should be.  Since my BIG 30 is just around the corner I thought I would get ready to check another item off the bucket list.  I signed up for an IRONMAN and as much as I would love to do this on my own with the help of Tim Key I will not only survive it but rock it!
A little background info- Tim is an Triathlon Coach who I met back in 2011 while working at Chef Louie's over hunting season.  You can check out his website here.  Even though I've only met Tim once, through our conversations I know he has me on the right track and his faith in me keeps me motivated.

Back to blogging...  So my friend Dede got me started blogging and I had a short txt conversation with her today about my slacking.  I have been so busy I don't make the blog my priority but her words of wisdom "better to live your life than blog about."  Thanks girl, I def don't feel bad skipping a month of sharing my thoughts with my 500 followers :)

Dede is a die hard Ragnar fan but she also was working on every half marathon in the state of SD in a year when I was working on my race a month.  Together we have PMS- that's Post Marathon Syndrome.

Other excitement in my life... Last night I went to the store after my workout on a quest to eat more protein and nutritious food.  It's been a little over 3 months now since my husband has been working away from home and cooking for one just is not worth my time.  I left the store with a box of Raisin Bran and a rotisserie chicken.  Sad to say I came home and ate a bowl of cold cereal.  There is something totally wrong with that picture.  Saturday I even watched the Food Network for my entire treadmill run only to leave craving Super Bowl snacks. 

Speaking of the Super Bowl who are you cheering for?  My brother-in-law Nate is a trainer for the 49ers so they have my vote!

Don't Let Me Drown

Today I talked my friend Cody into coming to a new gym with me.  Free two week trial membership is the first plus also the friendliest people of all the gym's I've been to in Sioux Falls!  Sioux Empire Fitness is quite a bit older than the other fitness centers in Sioux Falls but there were a lot of plus and minuses. 

Major plus,the pool was large enough for at least 6 lanes of swimming.  Extra membership fees allow you to join the tennis league, less people so you never have to sign up for cardio equipment or wait in line.  There were also a variety of fitness classes offered at a variety of times. 

Some of the negatives, the older facility was in need of a facelift and updated equipment.  Hence the reason I made my friend come with me for my trial membership I was scared to swim in the pool alone.  I know how to swim but trying to swim for workouts makes me feel like I'm going to drown. Doesn't it look a little creepy?

This week for physical education my students are doing Just Dance Kids on the Wii.  I bought a Wii a couple of years ago for something to do over the winter with my family.  I almost sold it because it just sat there but then my mom bought me guitar hero for my birthday.  I totally should have been in a band.  To this day I hear songs and think "I can rock that song." 

When I subbed last year I got to observe Wii being used for PE and went out and bought Just Dance 2 for myself.  Pretty sure my husband got more excitement out of it than I did.   Along with me trying to make up Zumba routines...

So glad hump day is over.  Can't wait to crawl into my cozy bed.

Is it Friday yet?  I am so exhausted from work and working out I feel like a grandma... 

Has anyone seen Pinks "Try" video?  I'm already a huge Pink fan and read a highly reliable article (Women's Health) about how she does P90X, yoga and cardio six days a week.  I caught her new video (I sometimes live under a rock) and thought I ate one too many snow cones because my abs sure don't look like that. Anyway I was pretty impressed and now I find the song on repeat in my head and motivating me to get my butt out of bed to get my morning workout in.

Yep that was pretty much my day because I am a grandma remember and I am tired from trying to do this after my run.

Happy New Year

After an amazing Christmas VaK with my hubs, I feel like we got married all over again.  His week off turned into two weeks and involved us being total gym rats.  Which help burn off the two(dozen) Christmas cookies I consumed.

So first I have to brag about my totally unique Christmas present from my brother.  My brother is quite the artist and has made me some pretty cool gifts over the years but this one brought tears to my eyes.  I know it is nothing stylish but it brings back the best memories.  Everything is made from parts of or first home.  The old wallpaper was from our bedroom, backed by wood panels from our play room and framed from one of the windows.  Anyone remember the Shirt Tails?

Check out this purse my Aunt got for Christmas.  Her daughter was called and conned into buying it because she was told her mom really wanted it.  The knuckle rings will come in handy for her in case a cow ever gets out of the pasture.

and the cake my mom made for my nieces birthday... She's going to be a lethal Tae Kwon Do master and a tactical rifle shooting phenom according to my brother.

Cale took me to Tuthill park one afternoon sledding.  We had so much fun going down the hill and probably would have stayed longer but then I took out two kids and thought we better leave...
